Playoff & Season Recap

Grace UM 16 CBC 10

Grace UM outhit and outplayed CBC Tuesday night and went home as SBA Harford County Champs.

We can be proud of our division championship...I looked at the trophies at church the other day and from what I can tell, our last division championship was 13 years ago.

CBC went 10-22 over the previous 2 seasons (including a 4-12 record last year). Thanks to the tough lessons learned through losing and some fresh faces, we fielded a very tough team this year. After dropping our first two games we went on a league best 7 game winning streak, beating some of the leagues traditional powerhouses (Oak Grove, Grace UM, Bel Air UM). We scored the most runs in the Harford County divisions (240) and the 3rd most runs in the 24 team league. Over the last 6 games of the regular season we outscored our opponents 113-44. Although the season ended with a loss (and it does for ever playoff team but 1) we should remember the many great moments we had as a team this year. Great season everybody, let's have some fun at the tournament!

Recap: Game 13 - Calvary 30, Great Commission 7

Coaches Comments:

So many to mention:

The battle for the top continues to mount as the regular season comes
down the stretch. With only 3 games left(all away) Calvary holds on to
a 1 game lead with Bel Air Naz breathing down our necks. Naz beat Oak
Grove last week. We have to hope that Grace Bible beats them Tuesday
to give us breathing room. The tie breaker would go to them.

What can I say---30 runs on 36 hits, all 12 players had at least 1 hit
and an rbi. Charlie was called up recently and helped the offense with
a 3 for 4 night. Chad had a productive evening going 2 for 4 while
knocking in 3 runs. Chad made a nice play behind the plate on a pop
up. the infield had several chances and were able to turn 2 DP's.

Recap: Game 12 - Calvary 14, BAUM 5

Coach's Comments:

I know they're late, but better than never.

10 players in the line up and everyone had at least 1 hit.
Bryan Gebhardt went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 1 rbi (and two sweet slides).  Joe muscled up and went 4 for 4, scoring 2 and knocking in 2.  3 of the 4 hits for Joe were driven deeeeep, just over the shortstop's head.  Jeff and Jay both went 3 for 4.  Also, some extra hustle on the base paths helped to spark a few extra runs.  Nice team effort again.

Attendance was down this week to 9.

Game 11 Recap: Calvary 20, Pleasant View 0

Coach's Comments:

Great win for the Calvary. 20 runs on the board and a great pitching performance(shut-out) by Brent Gebhardt(6-1) helps to keep Calvary at the top of the division. Brent pitched a great game going 5 innings while scattering 6 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout to end the game. The defense played well again behind their ace. All 11 players contributed for the offense. Brent, Bryan G, and Jeff all went 3 for 3, 9 of 11 players had muli hit games, 8 players had at least 1 rbi. Mac had a grand slam (with 6 rbis) and Jeff a bases loaded triple(4rbis). Way to go. Let's keep the train rollin'.

P.S.-I think the ump(s) did a good job too!

Back on Track

Well, no game recap from coach yet...but there isn't much to explain.

We bounced back from a well-fought loss with a twenty run explosion and a goose egg for Pleasant View.  What's the story?  We did everything right (not perfect, but right).  EVERYBODY hit, EVERYBODY used smart base running, and EVERYBODY played Big D!  One offensive highlight was a grand slam from Mac.  Another highlight was Dave's new nickname...Tomahawk!

It was another game straight out of the book of "Jay's Hitting School for Hitting".  Let's keep it up for our game on Thursday!

recap- game 10

GBC 17 CBC 10

After being down 13-0 before getting our first hit, we fought back admirably..but fell short.

comments from coach:

"Peanuts at the park was a hit for both the home team and visiting Grace Bible.
All good things have to come to an end. The streak is over at 7, but what a run. Time to start a new one!! Grace played a great game all around and we had some good fellowship with them. We just didn't play our game like we are used to. One thing that I did see is that we kept great attitudes and tried to pick each other up when we got down. I have to keep reminding myself that I (we) am (are) not perfect and there is only one that is "GOD". If you had'nt looked at the standings PleasantView beat Naz so we remain in first.

Highlights--Fans, Fans, Everywhere!! Attendance was at an all time high with 19 from CBC and 10 from Grace. Thanks for the support!"

Kevin Williams 4 for 4 with 1 run scored, 8 of 10 with a multi hit game. Back to back triples by Blake and Wally, and 3 batters later by Carl all in the 6th inning sparked a comeback attempt.

Rbis were contributed by Mac(2),

Wally(2), Carl(3), Jeff(1) and Joe(2).

2 games at HOME this week-- Tuesday vs. Pleasant View and Thursday vs BAUM

recap- game 9

CBC 20 Mountain Christian 3

comments from coach:

The W's keep going!! 7 in a row and still holding on to the top of the division. But the best thing is not necessarily the wins but the fellowship, the comraderie, and just having fun together. The Lord has assembled this team this year for a reason and each has a special part in it. Thanks to all who are a part of it.

9 of 11 players had a multi hit game, 10 of 11 scored a run, Carl had two triples, Jeff and Mac each had a HR. Blake went 4 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 rbis. This was a total team effort!!

See everyone at our home field Thursday.
Don't forget " Peanuts at the Park" (Bring your own drink)

Recap: Game 8 and 2/7th...

I have a feeling if we had gotten to finish the game on Tuesday, we would've done just what we did on Thursday...HIT!

Words from coach:

The streak continues but where are the fans!?
It was a rare occasion to only see 10 players in the line-up but the 10 there got the job done. 8 out of 10 players scored at least 1 run, 8 out of 10had at least 1 RBI, 9 out of 10 had a multi-hit game. Ryan Mac had 2 triples, Kevin Blake, Kevin Williams, and Jay each had 3 RBI's. Our record is 5-0 at home and 2-2 on the road. We continue to stand at the top of our division but more importantly is stand for the Lord.

Thursday 6/19 will be "Peanuts, get your Peanuts" We'll be tossing out bags of peanuts at the game. Please pass this along and invite members from CBC to attend and cheer us on!!

Recap- game 7

CBC 9 Grace UM 7

5 in a row, undefeated in the new jerseys! Another good win against a good team! This game was tight the whole time, but a 2 out 2 rbi single by Jay Daugherty in the 5th broke the tie and a 2 rbi triple by Dave Rice in the 6th gave us much needed insurance runs!

Comments from Coach:

CBC wins it's 5th in a row with a final score of 9-7. CBC collected 16 hits and put 9 runs on the board to hold off a 7th inning rally by Grace UM. It goes to show you that great defense does win games. CBC held Grace UM(5-1)to 7 runs with them scoring 3 in the top of the 7th. Good defense and the "mental game" were factors in the victory both in the field and the base paths. The offense this evening was led by the 7-8-9 hitters (Carl, Joe, Dave) who combined were 8 for 9 with 4 of the 9 runs scored and 4 rbis.

CBC plays this Thursday 6/5 at Roye Williams ES. KEEP IT ROLLIN' BOYS !!

Scouting Report: Grace UM

I've got some free time here on Saturday morning, and...I'm a loser. So I checked out some info on the league site. Here's there report on Grace UM:

Record: 5-1 (just lost their first game)
Runs Scored: 82
Runs Against: 33

*Note 1: Oak Grove had only given up 17 runs in their first 5 games, yet we were able to seal up another victory this past Tuesday.*

If we all attend "Jay Dougherty's Hitting School of Hitting", and keep up the Big D, we'll be set. Let the streak continue! Quote: "We won one today. If we win one tomorrow it'll be two in a row. If we win one again, it's called a winning streak. It has happened before." ~ Coach from "Major League II"

*Note 2: This is all for fun! Let's not take it too seriously, get out there, and have a blast!*

Recap - Game 6 (DE-FENSE!)

Notes from coach:

Game Highlights:::DE-FENSE DE-FENSE--that was the name of the game. CBC wins their 4th in a row and a BIG win over Oak Grove 10-5. CBC started out with some offense, scoring 3 runs in the 1st to take then lead and never looked back. CBC held a 7-0 lead thru the 4th before Oak Grove put some runs on the board. Carl "the vaccuum" Brooks handled numerous ground balls down at third throughout the game. The defense was great. Two doubles plays 1-6-3- and 4-6-3 were turned at opportune times to end the inning and keep Oak Grove scoreless. Kevin Blake also make a nice diving stop in LC on a shot that was destined for a HR. CBC put up 10R on 16H with Blanchard and Mac both going 3 for 4 and Chad went 2 for 3. Returning from the DL Joe pitched 7 innings only giving up 5 runs. IT WAS THE DEFENSE AND CLUTCH INNING!!

Great game guys!!! To those who weren't there...we missed you! Look forward to next Tuesday!

Recap- game 5

Calvary 18 Grace Assembly 12

A nice come-from-behind win for Calvary on Tuesday night. After being down 9-2 after 4 innings, CBC rallied for 6 runs in the 5th, 7 runs in the 6th and 3 more insurance runs in the 7th inning. With a couple regulars out, everyone stepped up their game and "hit the ball hard."

Some highlights:
- Brian Blanchard hit a 2 run HR in the 6th to put CBC ahead for good
- Kevin Blake went 5 for 5 with 4 doubles
- Wally Yocum went 4 for 5
- Ryan M, Carl B, Bryan G all went 3 for 5
- Kevin Williams went 3 for 4 with a triple

A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Karchner (Chad's Mom) for keeping the scorebook for us!

Don't wash those new uniform jerseys, we're undefeated in them! Great game guys.

Grace Assembly: Bulletin Board Material

Ok...so the two-game week will have to wait until next week. But, as of now, we STILL have a game on Thursday, 5/22 @ Grace Assembly. Now, I would like to say that there has been some trash talking on behalf of a Grace Assembly player. He works with my wife and also knows Bryan Blanchard...and he has been throwing some words our way. So, let that motivate the hit parade to continue! Consider him the T.O. of Grace Assembly. Take no prisoners! Haha! (just to clarify...this is all just for fun! only joking!)

Two Game Week!!! Woo hoo!

If you're like me, once the a game is over you start looking forward to the next one. Well, this week is a rare case when you only have to wait one day for the chance to play again. We play Tuesday AND Thursday this week. Now, I know some of the more "seasoned" players require a full week for recovery, but let's look at the positives:

1. If you tear it up...momentum carries to the next game.
2. If you stink it up...a chance at redemption right away.
3. MORE TIME TO PLAY BALL!

Let's go Calvary!

Recap- game 4

Calvary 34 Towne Baptist 21

Highlights from coach:

- Brian Blanchard and Kevin Blake both gun down a runner at the plate
- A sweet 4-5-3 double play (Bryan-Ryan-Jay)
- Ryan McMillan went 6 for 6, 5 runs scored 2 singles, 2 dbls, 2 HR 6 rbi's.
- 7 of the 11 players batted at least .500 during the game
- Jeff Karmann 4 for 5 w/ 6 rbi
- Carl Brooks 4 for 5 w/ 3 rbi

The bats were alive. The quote still stands "Hit the ball, don't try to place it, hit it hard, just hit the ball"!

Next week we will get a team picture and we'll try "Bring your Major/Minor league hat for a photo opt.

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Recap- game 3

CBC 22 North Harford 9

comments from the coach Joe:

"The hit parade was out last night!! I quote "just hit the ball , don't try to place it, hit it hard, just hit it". This famous quote from Jay Dougherty was used last night. Practice what you preach. It was a good offensive game for us. The defense wasn't bad at all and I think we got kind of complacent after scoring all those runs in the first few innings.
Thanks for all that came and participated.

Next week will be wear your major league/minor league hat day. If you have a BASEBALL cap that you would like to wear for a team photo for the web please bring it with you. We are at our home field but are the visitors so if you want BP and fielding please be there by 5:30pm.

Also if you owe money please bring it next week!"

Some highlights:

Great offensive production throughout the lineup last night, especially 1-2-3...Brian Blanchard, Ryan McMillan and Kevin Blake were a combined 12 for 12 with 12 runs scored.

Ryan McMillan was a double short of the cycle
Jay Dougherty was 2 for 3 with 5 rbi
Kevin Williams and Wally Yocum each had 3 rbi
Brent Gebhardt pitched a good game and supported his own cause with a double to deep left field.

19 hits for CBC, great job...lets keep the bats rolling into next week!

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Recap- game 2

Nazarene 14 Calvary 6

Some highlights:

Ryan McMillan and Kevin Blake both went 2 for 3 and scored twice
Jay Daugherty had 3 rbi
Jeff Karmann was 2 for 3 with 1 rbi
Carl Brooks was 2 for 3 with 2 rbi

CBC played a solid defensive game but fell victim to the Nazarene's ability to "hit it where we weren't"

Let's hit the batting cages before next week and come out ready to score some runs!

Back to Basics

What would we be if we didn't have a instructional hitting video? It's a short one, but actually as some good info. One of the big things I would add that people tend to have trouble with is...grip the bat with your fingers and line up the "knocking knuckles" on each hand. (It allows for more wrist snap). This is more for fun than anything...but also useful! Woohoo! Such versatility!

Recap- game 1

Crossroads 23 Calvary 12

We're not planning on keeping player stats on here, but after each game we'll give a recap, maybe some pics from the game and some random comments and thoughts...

First off, welcome to all the new guys...it's great to have you on the team, we're looking forward to having a good time this spring/summer and maybe even win a few games along the way.

We're very thankful to have a home field this season, thanks to Franklin Baptist Church and for everyone that came out to work on the field.

On to the game...

We showed some real life in the top of the first, putting 5 runs on the board and nearly batting around...the offense slowed down a bit through the middle innings and Crossroads just hit the ball harder and farther than we did.

Some highlights for CBC were:
*Dave Rice nearly hitting for the cycle (single, triple, home run)
*Good team defense, highlighted by Ryan MacMillan at shortstop
*Jay Daugherty solo home run
*Wally Yocum got a tick bite in his abdomen

I'm sure I left out some other notable moments, please mention them in the comments section!

Joe took some pics, we'll try to get those on here later this week, check back...

Grounds Crew

I stole this pic from Wally's blog. If you were there, there's no explanation needed. If not...this is our home field. Just a few weeks ago the entire field was grass. After a lot of tractor work, digging, raking, and old-fashioned elbow grease (what does that even mean?), the field looked like this yesterday. The rows are piles of stones and hard dirt clumps. "If you build it, they will come."
